Incredibly popular and undeniably cool, Mad Men is viewed by many as one of the greatest TV dramas ever made. All the scintillating style of series 1 to 4 is available on the Mad Men box set.
The series depicts the lives of advertisers working in New York on Madison Avenue during the 1960s. One of the main characters is Don Draper (who is played by Jon Hamm). Hamm won the 2008 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for this role. Draper is the creative director at advertising agency Sterling Cooper and is also one of the founding partners of the agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Other main characters include Peggy Olson (played by Elisabeth Moss) who is initially Draper’s secretary but becomes a copywriter and goes with Draper to the new agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Pete Campbell (played by Vincent Kartheiser) is a determined account executive from a wealthy background who later becomes one of the partners in the new agency, though his surname is not in the agency name. Betty Draper (later to become Betty Francis) is first introduced as Draper’s wife but they separate and then divorce, due in part to Draper’s womanising ways.
Other key characters include Joan Holloway (later to become Joan Harris) as an office manager at Sterling Cooper who has an affair with her boss Roger Sterling but later marries Greg Harris (a doctor). Roger Sterling, who is played by John Slattery, is a senior partner in Sterling Cooper and also served as Draper’s mentor.
The show has been praised for its visual style as well as its historical authenticity and each of the series in the DVD box set has won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Mad Men has won fifteen Emmys, four Golden Globes and a BAFTA. The dramas and twists in the Mad Men box set will hold your attention from start to finish, a feat that the advertising executives in the series would no doubt be proud
